Tryouts are typically held late in the
year for the following summer.
Blaze has always required players to try out and play with
their grade or age team.
During tryouts, coaches will try
and assess the skill sets for each player as outlined below.
Typically, notification letters
are sent out within two weeks of tryouts.
The entire Blaze coaching staff works as a team when
determining rosters. We look for certain attributes in the
players we select, and rosters invariably end up with
players from all over Section V. The friendships formed on
these teams last beyond the college years.
Younger offensive players are usually ALL expected to play
middie to some extent (offense and defense – including "man
down" situations). Younger offensive players that are
comfortable and successful playing attack will get regular
shifts at attack. At the older levels most offensive players
have opted for attack or middie, but we still encourage
occasionally playing both. Our extra man offense is
typically whoever is on the field at the time of the
penalty.
Defensive players will be expected to play close defense as
well as long stick middie from time to time. We may even ask
you to grab a short stick for a shift or two. All defensive
players will be expected to play in "man down" situations.
Typical selection of Blaze players is based on a COMBINATION
of the following:
o Stick skills
o Accurate passing
o Dodging skills
o Defensive/goalie skills
o Individual and team skills
o Athleticism
o Attitude
o Valuing team play over individual play
o Willingness to do what the team needs at practices and/or
games
o Players willing to learn that are open to coaching input
o Players that have potential to improve
o Players and parents who respect the team schedule and time
commitments
o Players and parents who respect the game, the venues and
our opponents
Selection of Blaze players is NOT based on the following:
o A set "quota" at each position
o What position you have played in the past
o What teams or coaches you have played for in the past
o What school district you are from
o Whether or not you can dodge four opponents and then get a
shot off
o How big/fast/strong you are for your age
